Assigning and Attaching Records in FeaturePlan

When you assign one record to another you create a parent-child relationship between the two records where the assigned record is considered the child record. The other record is considered the parent record. Attaching is much the same as assigning. It creates the same relationship between the records, the only difference being that it is viewed from the point of view of the parent record. In this case, the attached record is considered the child record. For example when working with enhancement requests, you assign them to one or more problem statements. If you are working with a problem statement you attach enhancement requests to it. This allows you to work in both directions in an uninterrupted fashion.

The importance of assigning records is that it creates trace links that allow you to view and manage the information flow within FeaturePlan. For example, from within a Release record you can see the requirements that were assigned to that release. And, if need be, FeaturePlan allows you to trace right back through the requirements and their associated problem statements to the
original Market Sensing inputs.

Assigning Records

You can assign and attach records from either the quick view or the record view. For the purposes of this guide, we will cover how to assign a record using the quick view. In particular, for this example, we shall assign an enhancement request to a problem statement.

To assign an enhancement request to a problem statement:

1. In the quick view, select the records you want to assign.

2. In the quick view menu, go to Assign > Assign.
The Assign dialog box is displayed. It lists all the problem statements available within the selected suite and product.

3. Select one or more parent records to which you wish to assign the selected record.

4. When you are finished, click the Assign button.
This relationship can now be viewed from either the child or the parent record.
